Medical acupuncture
At Sportsfyssen, we offer treatment with medical and Chinese acupuncture. In recent years, there has been a lot of interest in the treatment of patients with disorders from the musculoskeletal system with acupuncture. In Sweden and Norway, it is physiotherapists who treat with acupuncture, as it is natural for physiotherapists who have in-depth knowledge of muscle-related issues to supplement their treatment with acupuncture. Most of the country's maternity wards use acupuncture as pain treatment for women in labor as well.
All of our physical therapists have therefore taking courses in medical acupuncture. There is a documented effect of acupuncture on trigger points in the muscles. We are able to treat pain and reduced mobility in muscles. These will typically be nuisances such as tension headaches, neck/shoulder pain, back pain, pain in the legs and feet. Acupuncture is very effective against tennis elbow and Achilles tendonitis. In contrast to Chinese acupuncture, very few needles are used and the stimulation time is in small muscles, short (5 to 10 seconds) in large muscles such as back-leg muscles, up to 20 min.

Ear acupuncture
Auriculotherapy and posturology. Auriculotherapy is ear acupuncture which was discovered and further developed by the Frenchman Paul Nogier back in 1951. In 1990, the first 43 points were standardized and approved by the WHO and much research continues and many more points have been approved since the beginning. On the ear we have reflex points just like under the feet, it is these points we treat among others.Since there is a direct neurological connection from the ear to the brain, this treatment has a very quick and effective effect. It is really good for treating pain and inflammation.
The posturology was developed by Miguel Marignan, who is Paul Nogier's collaboration partner.
By using different points on the ear, a functional bias which could be arisen as a result of an injury, strain, tension or otherwise, is corrected in a gentle and easy way.

How is the treatment done?
We either use needles that must only be in place while you are at the clinic for treatment or pins that must be in your ear, also when you leave the clinic, in order to achieve a more effective treatment result. You will have a small skin-colored patch placed over the needle, which you can take a shower with without it falling off.As a starting point, the needle stays between 7-14 days. After that you will usually start to feel the needle under the patch, this means the needle has come out of the ear and you have to take the patch off and the needle would come with it.
It is very normal that you may be a little sore around the needle for the first 24-48 hours after the treatment. If it becomes too bothersome, you can take out the needle with tweezers. Another option is to add cotton wool and put a piece of tape over it, so that you can sleep undisturbed for the first few days until it calms down.
If in any way you feel discomfort, swelling, redness or other discomfort around the needle and the ear, you must remove the needle with tweezers and contact your doctor at the sports physiotherapist.
If you are a blood donor, you can get acupuncture from an authorized physiotherapist without any problems, but be aware that you get 4 months of quarantine if you get acupuncture from an unauthorized therapist (masseur, alternative therapist), according to the blood bank's quarantine rules per 5/8 2012, after acupuncture treatment, tattooing, piercing and travel in certain vulnerable countries. This is a rule which, in the case of acupuncture, takes into account the risk of infection when using reusable needles that are autoclaved (heat treated) at too low a temperature.
We only use sterile disposable needles. It is relatively new for physiotherapists to take a course in the use of needle acupuncture and until now it has mostly been anesthetists with special training, alternative practitioners and visiting Chinese acupuncturists who have offered this form of treatment.
We are authorized physiotherapists with courses in medical acupuncture and we have patient insurance which includes treatment with needle acupuncture. For some patients, being treated with a needle is painful, and it would be untrue to say that it does not hurt, but the needle is very thin (only approx. 0.3 mm) and the treatment time is short, so the discomfort is significantly less than, for example, to give blood or get vaccinated. You may become very tired after an acupuncture treatment, as your body begins a healing process in the area you have been treated and a natural short-term worsening of the pain may occur, therefore it is wise to rest after treatment and drink plenty of water.
As it is very individual how you respond to acupuncture, your treatment will often be accompanied by you having to fill in a pain form, this is to map how you respond to the treatment and to be able to give you acupuncture with the optimal treatment interval.
The health insurance does not subsidize acupuncture treatment, as it is perceived as alternative treatment. Therefore, the price per treatment is as for a normal treatment.
